Horror is many things and is expressed in many ways. It may be a look of horror on someone's face, or a feeling of horror when something goes 'bump' in the night. It might be a scary movie, or a best-selling thriller novel. Generally, horror is a concept that is associated with fear, revulsion, and suspense, and is an emotion that many people fear and many more seek from the safety of their lounge room or local cinema. Far from being a subversive genre, horror films, television series and novels are frequently best-selling or big revenue raisers for the authors, directors and companies that market them. In today's world of health and safety restrictions, high-tech security and rapid-response emergency teams, people are searching for thrills and frights they no longer get in ordinary life.
Horror is defined as being the emotion of revulsion or disgust which comes after a frightening or scary sight or experience. This feeling of horror may be caused by a violent act, a gruesome monster, an exhibition of inhumane behaviour, or an occurrence of supernatural origin. Common creatures that appear in horror are vampires, Frankenstein-like monsters, zombies and the undead, devils and demons, and anything with an undertone of evil. In more recent times, horror has also been expressed in slasher movies through mass-murder – any form of death that is unnatural or inhumane has been adopted by horror film-makers as being a relevant method of expressing doom and suspense.
